As I am standing in line getting my admission tickets, I hear some kids asking their parents: “Are we going to the Acropolis or the Parthenon?” That is an excellent question. As I look up the hill, which structure is the Acropolis? Which one is the Parthenon? Or are they the same thing? Are they just different names for the same place?
Surprisingly, they are quite often thought of as the same thing.
Well, actually, they are not.
The Acropolis is the hill that contains the entire architectural complex of the historical ruins. The Parthenon is just one of the many structures. In fact, there are a total of 22 structures on the Acropolis.
However, the Parthenon is the most famous and recognizable structures of all. If you search for the term “Acropolis” on the Internet, chances are that most of the pictures that you will see are pictures of the Parthenon – hence the confusion.
But the Parthenon is probably the most significant structure of all. It is rich in both history and treasures. Most of the artifacts and collectibles on display in the Acropolis Museum were discovered on the slopes leading to the Parthenon.
In the picture here, I am halfway up the hill on the Acropolis taking a picture of the Parthenon, which is on the top of the hill. Makes sense?
